THE ALTERNATIVE COMEDY FESTIVAL IS BACK!

SOMERVILLE, MA - AltCom! The Alternative Comedy Festival is back! The 2009 festival, which takes place May 7th-10th in Davis Square in Somerville, MA , features a star-studded lineup of the world's most unique comedians: Janeane Garofalo, Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company, Rob Riggle from "The Daily Show", Eugene Mirman, Leo Allen, The Onion Live, Myq Kaplan, Jamie Kilstein, The Steamy Bohemians, Brian Longwell, Ken Reid, and many more!

"I'm very excited about this year's lineup," says AltCom director Brian Joyce. "It's an incredibly unique mix of stand up, sketch comedy, musical and political comedy, local acts and international acts. There's definitely something for everyone! There really is no other festival like this in the United States, and I think it's a great fit for Davis Square."

(SHOWALTER/IAN BLACK WILL NO LONGER BE APPEARING) Kicking off the festival on Thursday, May 7th are two veterans of the MTV cult series "The State", Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black. Stars of the upcoming Comedy Central series "Michael and Michael Have Issues", they will be supported by former "Saturday Night Live" writer Leo Allen, the Comedy Studio's Ken Reid, and the self-described "Maccabe of Wisecrackery" MC Mr. Napkins. Showtime is 8PM at the Somerville Theatre. Tickets $32, available through Ticketmaster.com.

Later that night, Ken Reid returns to the stage with Lafta Obscura, the brilliant sketch show featuring Improv Boston vets Sean Sullivan and Nate Johnson. Showtime is 10PM at the Somerville Theatre's brand new, state-of-the-art Screening Room. Tickets $10, cash at the door.

The Festival continues on Friday, May 8th, with one of America's most accomplished actors and comedians, Janeane Garofalo. The outspoken star of "24", "Saturday Night Live" and "The Ben Stiller Show" will be supported by one of America's top up-and-coming political comedians, New York's Jamie Kilstein, plus Boston comedy duo Myq Kaplan and Micah Sherman. Showtime is 7PM at the Somerville Theatre. Tickets $32, available through Ticketmaster.com.

Later that night, the laughs continue with the Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company. The sketch group that produced "Saturday Night Live" stars Amy Poehler and Horatio Sanz will be joined on stage by Rob Riggle, one of the most popular correspondents from Comedy Central's "Daily Show"; Eugene Mirman, the Lexington native who plays Eugene the Landlord on HBO's "Flight of the Conchords"; and Great Britain's favorite Mod comedian, Ian Moore. Showtime is 10PM at the Somerville Theatre. Tickets $29, available through Ticketmaster.com.

On Saturday Night, May 9th, the Festival moves to the Burren, where Myq Kaplan, Jamie Kilstein and MC Mr. Napkins team up for "TOFUnny", the world's only comedy show (as far as we know, but who keeps track of these things?) featuring an all-vegan lineup! Showtime is 6PM. Tickets $10, cash at the door.

Later on at the Burren, the Steamy Bohemians take the stage with their variety show "Jerkus Circus." The Steamies will be joined by fellow comedians Jamie Kilstein and Ian Moore, plus a variety of freaks, weirdos, human pretzels and burlesque dancers! Showtime is 8PM. Tickets $10, cash at the door.

Back at the Somerville Theatre, Boston's favorite non-motivational speaker Brian Longwell will debut his brand new one-man show, "My 401K is now a 4.1K." Showtime is 10PM at the Screening Room. Tickets $10, cash at the door.

Closing out the Festival on Sunday night, May 10th is America's Finest News Source, The Onion, appearing live in Boston for the very first time! Over 3 million Americans read The Onion each week. Tonight they present their unique variety of political commentary, short sketches and video clips at The Armory, Somerville's newest live arts space. Showtime is 8PM; tickets ($20) and directions are available at www.artsatthearmory.org
