Mint 400 Records, known for reimagining the work of musical icons, announces its latest tribute compilation, Mint 400 Records Presents: 8 Track KnickKnacks (A Compilation of Songs Written In The 1970’s). Following past collections dedicated to the ’60s, ’80s, and ’90s—as well as artist-focused releases honoring Tom Petty, Nirvana, The Beach Boys, Lou Reed, Link Wray, and David Bowie—the label once again reframes familiar material through a modern lens. This time, the focus is the 1970s, not as a fixed nostalgia trip but as a loose, shape-shifting catalog still open to reinterpretation.

Standouts lean into that elasticity. Philly’s Looser and NJ’s Those Looks dig into deeper cuts from Big Star and Squeeze, pulling overlooked songs out of obscurity and giving them new weight. Novablood rework Nightclubbing into a colder, post-punk groove, stripping away the bluesy swagger in favor of something more rigid and modern. Meanwhile, The Bitter Chills flip Love Gun from glam stomp into a loose, rootsy sway, while Yellow Pills and Please Be Careful reshape The Guns of Brixton and Summer Breeze into groove-driven instrumentals.

Elsewhere, familiar names take unexpected turns. MamajoeVramajoe—featuring members of Gustaf—put a sharp, off-kilter spin on That’s the Way (I Like It), while other artists tackle staples from Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and Fleetwood Mac. The compilation cuts across the decade’s full spectrum—from The Cure and Patti Smith to Cheap Trick and Michael Jackson—without settling into imitation. Across all 27 tracks, 8 Track KnickKnacks avoids straight revivalism, treating these songs as raw material—meant to be bent, reshaped, and pushed somewhere new.
