Two-Man Giant Squid - Two-Man Giant Squid

Mint 400

“A kaleidoscopic blend reminiscent of MGMT, Modest Mouse, Parquet Courts, and Pulp – a mix of early 2000s indie and gleams of 90s Britpop.” – Post-Punk

“…a pounding backbeat with electronic elements for a sardonic examination of nostalgia and trend-chasing.” – Under the Radar [on “I was a DJ in 2015”]

“With its infectious rhythm and candid storytelling, the song is a bold preview of their upcoming self-titled album, promising a record that’s as unpredictable as it is compelling.” – Last Day Deaf [on “Weird Recordings (you’ve got some)”]

“Somehow the disparate elements all blend together into one cohesive whole that becomes more compelling due to its sonic diversity, creating a track that’s likely to stick with you well beyond the first listen.” – New Noise Magazine  [on “Weird Recordings (you’ve got some)”]

Following a string of singles beginning last year – including the LCD Soundsystem inspired “I was a DJ in 2015,” the boiling post-punk tug-of-war of “Weird Recordings (you’ve got some)” and a stellar cover of the Spiritualized psych-rock classic “I Think I’m in Love” – Brooklyn’s Two-Man Giant Squid have released their self-titled album Two-Man Giant Squid on Mint 400 Records, co-produced by the band themselves and Teddy O’Mara (Sir Chloe, Um, Jennifer?). The band, which began as the anonymous, experimental bedroom project of musician Mitchell Vinokur, has since evolved into a five-piece band, with the addition of Yan Kogan (he/they), Robbie Sawyer (he/him), Sam Borges (she/her) and Brendan Jones (he/him).

While discussing the forthcoming album, Vinokur states, “Half self-recorded, half a producer’s vision- the boundaries between spontaneous freakouts and designed payoffs smash into each other on our self-titled LP. At its heart, it’s a high energy art-punk record with a psychedelic edge, but it offers listeners their deepest step yet into our eclectic world. The dance-punk roller coaster of “Don’t Go To Snareworld” standing hip to hip with the Pixies-like bendings of “Room Full of Ghosts” demonstrates perfectly how we see life and in turn, this record: An unrelenting barrage of contrast that must work together to compliment itself if the whole intends to survive.”

Vinkour continues, “The defining sound of this record is perhaps in its constant re-inventing of itself and its sardonic ‘the world is fucked, lets dance’ attitude. Often taking song structures at their simplest forms and stretching them to uncomfortable extremes, we are hellbent on uncovering the faint lines between passion, obsession, and self-destruction. Lyrically, it’s weird, fun, very stream-of-consciousness and often very tongue-in-cheek. Every feeling I have on the record has two sides to it, and I’m going to let both of those sides be known even if it means arguing with myself. It’s like an unreliable narrator thing and the inner turmoil of it all plays out front and center throughout the record.”

The band are an official artist at SXSW, and will be celebrating their new LP with an album release show at Market Hotel in Brooklyn, NY on March 29, 2025.
