Turnpike Gates - Not Myself Today

Self-Released

Founded by Philadelphia-born / Jersey City-based songwriter Ryan Smith, Turnpike Gates fuses punk, alternative and heartland rock to create a sound all its own. With the new full-length album Not Myself Today, Smith returns with his unique brand of East Coast-flavored angst.

The follow-up to the 2021 EP City In HeatNot Myself Today was recorded at Little Eden in Asbury Park, N.J., and produced by Pete Steinkopf (The Bouncing Souls). The album takes the listener on a careening journey through Smith’s psyche as he enlists a talented group of musicians to deepen the texture of the album’s catchy progressions with piano, horns, strings and vocal harmonies. This includes Steinkopf, who plays lead guitar on the album’s title track; Jared Hart (Mercy Union, The Scandals), who provides vocal harmonies; Jenn Fantaccione (The Bouncing Souls, The Front Bottoms), who provides strings; Danny “Dubs” Windas (Beach Rats), who plays drums, and Armand Gersbach on bass. The album was mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Mike Kalajian at Rogue Planet Mastering in Hudson Valley, N.Y.

Smith is supporting the release with shows throughout the region, including a solo performance on Aug. 24 at Crossroads in Garwood in support of Tim Barry and Laura Stevenson. Tickets are on sale here.
