Tide Bends - All Of The Time [EP]

“Advice” is the lead single off Tide Bends‘ new EP ‘All Of The Time’, out October 2 on Mint 400 Records. The Asbury Park four-piece — Dave Hough, Dan Nolan, MJ Hancock and Rudy Meier (Yawn Mower, Bristler) — wrote the song after one too many unsolicited life lessons from people who could stand to take a few themselves. It came out of being told how to live by people who clearly weren’t managing it themselves,” says Hough. “I didn’t intend to write about it. It’s not really frustration, more just poking fun at how hypocritical it is, however good-willed.”

All Of The Time is four songs written collectively by the band and recorded across three home setups — Hough’s place in Belmar, Meier’s studio in Brick, Hancock’s in Ocean Township — before Meier pulled it all together at the mix. It marks a shift for the band: a dancier, groove-forward turn toward Madchester and 90s Britpop, layered over the heartland-rock backbone Tide Bends have built their sound on. The result sits somewhere between Beck, Blur and Spoon — that late-90s/early-2000s lineage of UK-inflected, melodically restless rock that’s grown rare. Where a lot of bands chasing a throwback sound default to post-punk revival, Tide Bends are pulling from a different, less-worn thread.
