The Tisburys - A Still Life Revisited
“Will it all just stay the same?” asks songwriter Tyler Asay on “Forever”, the first single from The Tisburys’ new album, A Still Life Revisited. Recorded at Dr. Dog’s Mt. Slippery studio in the suburbs of Philadelphia with their longtime engineer/producer Justin Nazario, A Still Life Revisited is The Tisburys’ most collaborative effort to date. In an era where “bands” are seen as one individual, this is truly a “band record” with every member contributing songwriting and production ideas (especially from longtime lead guitarist John Domenico and keyboardist/co-producer Jason McGovern). “The goal with this record was ‘everything in its right place” says Asay. “Every instrument is playing its part and every song came together like a puzzle”.
“I wrote [‘Forever’] slowly over a long period of time, it feels like it came from several different parts of my brain. We took a while to build the arrangement and re-wrote it several times but eventually it clicked into place”, says lead vocalist/guitarist Asay about The Tisburys‘ new single. “I love how all the pieces of the song work together; the guitars bounce off the bass, the synth helps build the chords.” The music video for “Forever” was directed by Billy Denham and shows the band with the “spiritual guide” of A Still Life Revisited, Lucy The Elephant in Margate, NJ. “My family history is intertwined with Lucy, my great aunt painted the still life of Lucy on the album cover, an elephant never forgets”.
While their last album (2022’s Exile On Main Street) channeled 90s radio rock such as Gin Blossoms and The Replacements, A Still Life Revisited pushes into the aughts with the rustic bombast of millennial indie such as Frightened Rabbit and The Hold Steady. With themes that tackle memory & chosen family, A Still Life Revisited overflows with songs that find home in both packed dive bars and stadiums. It’s about looking back at your life, the choices and decisions you’ve made, and celebrating where you ended up today. The album was mixed by Phil Joly (The Strokes, Daft Punk, Lana Del Rey), mastered by Ryan Schwabe (Beach Bunny, Slaughter Beach Dog, Hop Along). A Still Life Revisited by The Tisburys is out Friday, April 25th on Double Helix Records and SofaBurn Records.
