Introducing modernest r&b auteur Son Little

Philly singer/songwriter Aaron Livingston made a name for himself lending his beautifully dour vocals to tracks with The Roots and, most famously, producer RJD2 for a joint album called The Abandoned Lullaby, has reemerged as Son Little.

Check out his thrilling new track entitled “The River,"  The song delivers a magnificently seductive and ominous reconstruction of American blues infused with elements of hip-hop and raw guitar rock. The song infectiously recalls “Lets Go Crazy” era Prince, gritty blues/gospel and bedroom indie pop.

GQ says "his voice is so warm and soulful, like a combination of Little Willie John and Bob Marley, that it makes you slow down and listen. This is soul music for the hip-hop generation. It gives me hope for the future of music."

“The seductive road house blues of “The River” is rooted in a knee-slapping stomp that only helps lead singer Aaron Livingston’s lyrics gain momentum as suspense builds.” – Okay Player

Vibe also wrote that Little’s “soulful vocals circle the drains of despair but offer the perfect self-medication for today's sorrows.”

Complex.com is currently premiering three separate versions of the song (there are 2 remixes of the single) and video simultaneously. Each corresponding music video matching a particular version of the song. Check it out here.

"Son Little clearly studies, respects and loves the music that came before him. What happens next, though, is what makes him so appealing. Aaron Livingston made his name as a collaborator with The Roots and RJD2, each of whom helped him develop a sound that touches on soul, blues, hip-hop and reggae. Samples, fuzzy guitar and simple drums work together to create an undeniable groove, and as a songwriter, he can really tell a story. As a vocalist, Livingston brings the heartbreak — his voice feels real and rough around the edges — while his impeccably crafted songs are honest and unpretentious. There's not a self-conscious moment here, yet it's pop music at the core. Listen to "The River" to discover a unique, fearless voice." - Rita Houston WFUV/NPR Music
