"The simplistic assessment of L.A.’s Silversun Pickups is that they’ve been mining the same strip of fuzzed-out ’90s alt-rock their whole career, but it’s long past time to acknowledge the group’s evolution over its past two albums. Neck Of The Woods ramped up the band’s goth and industrial influences in 2012, while 2015’s Better Nature made a sharp turn into full-on synth-pop, for better and worse. The group’s musical identity continues to morph in intriguing directions for Widow’s Weeds (produced by Butch Vig, a move that doesn’t exactly rebut the claims of ’90s guitar fetishism), as evidenced by lead single “It Doesn’t Matter Why,” a pulsing uptempo groove that finds the band sounding more vital than it has in years." - The AV Club

"Steadily determined instruments bruise their way through warm, slow strings, an unflinching grit that finds powerful release on an alternatively heavy and spacey solo." - Consequence of Sound (Origins of "Freakazoid")

"it seems pretty obvious that, nearly 20 years into its career, the band is humming with renewed energy." - The Los Angeles Times

"the arrangement winds into guitar harmonics, violin solos and the passionate belting of frontman Brian Aubert." – Rolling Stone

"The record does have a mourning vibe, but it's not sad. It's change. It's growing up and moving on and letting go of things. And it's okay to be sad about those things and mourn them. It's actually healthy to do so and take the time to do it. At the end of the day, it's going to be much better and much more fulfilling when you get through it." – Brian Aubert

Widow’s Weeds ends up being about rebirth and renewal. For Aubert, moving forward involves staying connected to his own self (and remembering to prioritize self-care) and being attuned to creative impulses when they arise. If that means going outside of his comfort zone, so be it,” Aubert says. “This album feels the most naked out of all of them.”
