Queen Cult - BE BETTER [EP]

Mother City

“Raising the slay factor to a hundred, English newcomers Queen Cult inaugurate the new year with a hard-hitting and fierce indie anthem, ‘Be Better’. Built over furious and rebellious alt-rock stylings, the single features a certain punk flavouring to it, a sign that the British group likes to bathe in eclecticism, looking at their artistry through wide cultural lenses.” Mesmerised

“With a strong political edge and a steadfast LGBTQ+ identity, Queen Cult instantly found themselves creating hard hitting, topical anthems to vent against the system.” Distorted Sound

Queen Cult have carefully carved out a space for themselves in rock and continue to dial up the anticipation for what’s to come” – Earmilk

Queen Cult are actively proving that rock has a place within 2023. Their take on rock music is unique and infectious, gathering support from fans and music tastemakers alike.” – She Makes Music

Queen Cult are an alt rock band based near Manchester, England led by Maisie Johnson, the band’s lead songwriter, vocalist and guitarist with Brodie Carson on drums, Piers Jarvis on bass and recent recruit Ruby Augar playing lead guitar.

Unapologetically queer, Queen Cult released their fierce and politically charged debut EP Woman That I Know‘ in January 2022 and a second EP, For Now Not Forever’, followed in February 2023 which documented recent personal challenges.

2024 marked the start of a new musical chapter for Queen Cult. With a furious pace, a punk attitude and defiantly bold lyrics, the band aren’t afraid to tackle topics typically less explored in rock on their new five track EP, BE BETTER, released August 2nd. With lyrics that explore boundaries in all their forms, the music hops across different genres including punk, rock, pop and metal.

EP title track ‘Be Better’ was written about the love between two friends and the realisation that platonic love can overlap and be confusing at times, especially when it comes to queer relationships. It is currently on the Today’s Punk playlist on Spotify.

Stop Calling’ is a dig at how hard the industry has made it to plug a single in this climate and how streaming has made music lose its worth and tangibility.

The Hand Lender’ is a message for sex positivity.

To Be A Boy’ Maisie explores themes of gender dysphoria and expectations of AFAB people growing up in a small town, and in the music industry as a whole.

The EP concludes with ‘Hole in My Head’ which explores experiencing a lust for someone – whether it’s wrong or right.

Recent singles have enjoyed major support from Spotify and Apple including the playlists New Music Friday UK, All New Rock, All New Punk, Rainbow, Pulp, Shockwave, Fresh Finds (Spotify) and The New Rock, Alternative Rock and New In Rock (Apple). They have also picked up specialist plays on influential UK radio stations including BBC Radio 1, Kerrang and 6 Music.

Queen Cult have also been building their reputation on the road with their incendiary live performances. Recent UK festivals have included Y Not, The Great Escape, Brighton Pride, Bingley and Loud Women.
