Le Big Zero - How To Use A Semicolon;
Once upon a time, bands pioneered uncharted dimensions, trading familiar song structures and time signatures for the different, the daring, and the disorienting–in the best way. Music was expanding its language. Melodic dissonance and angular dynamics injected a new sense of urgency, giving way to beloved bands from Sonic Youth and Jawbox to Superchunk and the Dismemberment Plan.
That era is not over. This spirit exists where pop sensibilities merge with a punk spirit and dares to deliver something different. For discerning listeners, we submit Brooklyn’s own Le Big Zero—a band that has been thrilling audiences since 2019 with a unique vision of possibility, taking cues from underground heavyweights of the past and bounding headlong into the future. On their forthcoming EP, How To Use a Semicolon, Le Big Zero—led by the dual vocals of songwriter/guitarist Michael Pasuit and singer Carolina Aguilar—presents three tracks humming with electric shapes, sounds and colors, primed to capture your undivided attention.
After two albums and an EP, How To Use a Semicolon is a statement of purpose for Le Big Zero and a homecoming of sorts for singer Carolina Aguilar, returning to the microphone after stepping away to focus on motherhood. She and Pasuit instantly fell back into writing, buoyed by their shared sense of humor. Aguilar’s time away seems only to have strengthened her vocals, with her emotive alto bringing an unmistakable depth to each track, whether carrying melodies alone or weaving in and out of tight harmony with Pasuit.
On How To Use a Semicolon, Le Big Zero may ultimately not offer grammatical instruction. But over only three tracks and 12 minutes, they adeptly harness the power and possibilities of rock music to great effect, unafraid to explore different corners of the canvas with creativity and passion. It’s a sound that rejects the trappings of pop and ends up equally accessible and satisfying on the other side.
