Cayucas - Hangin' On The Westside

This record encapsulates a lot of different feelings during around 2020-21. I was spending a lot of time on the westside of LA from Point Dume to Venice Beach and in particular Topanga. This area turned into a kind of escape from LA feeling which felt vital at the time. There is something about Topanga that has an old school 1970’s surfer dude who’s still hanging around ‘living the dream’ vibe to it, it felt right to soak that in. We’re still chipping away on a quest to channel the beach boys and Brian Wilson. Dug a little deeper with pre Pet Sounds stuff. We recorded everything at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, got to look at photos of The Doors & Prince on the walls everyday. Common expressions used when making this record were: ‘we need to “Cayuca-fy” it.’ ‘it needs to be a little more left of center’ ‘Tocaya for lunch?’ ‘keep California on top’ ‘can we use the old echo chambers??’. Some of the common lyrical themes are; escapism, summertime nostalgia, and self reflection. As always we hope you enjoy it. – Ben & Zach
