The World According to C.R. represents the end of an era for C.R. and the Degenerates. The band will continue as cohesive unit under a new name so this will be the last official release under this guise. The World According to C.R. finds band mastermind Chris Gennone in a mournful mood as he reflects on the state of the world. “Once” sounds like countrified Nick Cave with gorgeous slide guitar and gentle violin brought to a grand scope finale of obliteratingly heavy guitars. “Ex-Marine” is about the PTSD plight of a veteran trying to readjust to civilian life. “Thin White Veil” and “Hologram” recall Milk Music and Neil Young in their melodic, spaced out lead guitars while “Freak of Nature” might be the most heart-achingly beautiful song Gennone has ever written.
Gennone and co. have created a lot of great music together as C.R. and the Degenerates so if you haven’t been paying attention, you now have four great records to check out. Luckily, the band will continue on under a new name so be on the lookout for that. Until that time, take a step back and reflect on The World According to C.R.
