untitled (halo) - untitled (halo)
Even in paradise, there’s no escaping the dull ache of ennui. In a place like Los Angeles, where endless summers make time feel almost weightless, something darker—or perhaps emptier—always hums underneath. Longtime friends Ariana Mamnoon, Jack Dione, Jay Are, and Nicholas Noneman, together as LA-based band untitled (halo), have coined this subdued emotional current running beneath a place whose vastness promises exponential growth while quietly fostering emotional stasis: California Melancholia. In their self-titled debut album, out via Dirty Hit, the band transposes the trembling discontent and monotonous pain of existence into something tangible and cathartic.
Written over a year in their Glassell Park studio, the record is about construction: how memories are edited, identities formed, and personal mythology built from the pieces left behind. During this time, (halo) members were navigating their own heartbreak, tumultuous relationships, existential reckonings, and isolation. They were, in their words, “emotional people in need of sonic catharsis.” What began as a period of uncertainty became the impetus for making the record at all. The studio became an escape for Ari, Jack, Jay, and Nick, a place they could pour everything into sound. With each song, a page was marked, time was kept, and in some small way, they made sense of the nonsensical.
