Sofia Wolfson - Thrown
“When a fiction writer composes music, you get some of the best lyricism” – Atwood Magazine
“Sofia Wolfson is on the rise” – The Line of Best Fit
Sofia Wolfson releases her highly anticipated, intimate sophomore album Thrown
Produced by Wolfson herself, Thrown marks her first time producing a record on her own. The songs were gathered over her years living in New York completing her masters degree. Although the songs themselves cover four different relationships in Wolfson’s life, they work together to form a cohesive narrative, as though they spell out a single breakup. She was interested in the moment that the multiple renders itself into the singular, revealing a pattern only perceived with distance.
Thrown came together through an intimate recording process, made among close friends. It was recorded largely live at Infinite Family in Los Angeles with Harrison Whitford (Phoebe Bridgers), Remy Morritt (Christian Lee Hutson, Lizzy McAlpine), and Benny Bock (Feist, Margaret Glaspy, Lucy Dacus). The record was engineered by Franky Fox and Gregg White (Neil Young, Queens of the Stone Age, Lana Del Rey), and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Patricia Sullivan (Blake Mills, Pino Palladino).
In her own unique pocket of the alternative-folk world, Wolfson’s music combines a childhood spent devoted to The Band, Lucinda Williams, and Gillian Welch with the bizarrely beautiful textures and tones of Blake Mills, Aldous Harding, and Feist. At the core of her production style is a championing of the guitar itself as an endlessly multifaceted instrument. Thrown is a reflection of her 20+ year relationship with the instrument and was greatly influenced by the years she worked at LA’s Old Style Guitar Shop, home of the rubber bridge guitar.
For the album cover, Sofia worked with the archive of her favorite photographer, Michael Northrup, whose work influenced the writing of Thrown.
A musician and writer born and raised in LA, Wolfson makes music that blends the indie-folk-rock of her LA upbringing with allusions to literature and fine art (her latest record an ekphrastic response to Edward Hopper’s “Soir Bleu”). Her 2024 album Imposing on a Hometown, produced in part by Gabe Wax (Zach Bryan, Soccer Mommy) and featuring contributions from Hand Habits, The Milk Carton Kids, and Harrison Whitford, landed on year-end lists at Cosmopolitan, The Line of Best Fit, and New Commute. In 2025 she received her MFA in creative writing from The New School, and her fiction has appeared in Oyez Review, Superstition Review, Open Ceilings, Flash Fiction Magazine, and Westwind.
Over the last decade she has toured the US and UK, opening for artists and heroes like Laura Veirs, Frances Quinlan, Kath Bloom, Fenne Lily, and Katy Kirby. Her upcoming record, Thrown – executive produced by Wolfson herself – arrives as her most honest and quietly disarming work yet.
