BAD OPERATION - Everything Must Go
The follow-up album to one of Brooklyn Vegan’s “64 Essential Ska Albums from 1964 to Present.” BAD OPERATION’s sophomore album ‘EVERYTHING MUST GO‘ sees the New Orleans five-piece emboldening their signature NEW TONE ska sound while allowing themselves to showcase their ability to write timeless earworms. Where BAD OPERATION’s last album was a fiery introduction to what the band dubbed NEW TONE, ‘EVERYTHING MUST GO‘ shows BAD OPERATION further evolving the genre they helped create.
The lead single from BAD OPERATION’S sophomore full length ‘EVERYTHING MUST GO.’ “Free Dom” is a scathing examination of both the false freedom promised by American capitalism, as well as, any promise of freedom outside of self. Over groovy bass lines, infectious organ hooks and an anthemic chorus, BAD OPERATION frontman Dominic Minix pulls from his lived experience traversing the fire while searching for peace.
BAD OPERATION’s darkest party track to date, “Rico” takes a sarcastic first person critique of late stage Capitalist wealth. Wickedly mesmerizing guitars back a blistering horn line while the organ and vocal melodies disjointedly dance around each other. Dominic Minix’s lyrics provide an instant classic for the crowd to sing along: “Ricooooooo”
Harkening back to the New Orleans sound that inspired the first wave of Ska in Jamaica, “You Don’t Answer My Calls” sounds like the Fats Domino / Skatalites collab that never was. With an organ line that sounds straight out of the Jackie Mittoo songbook and a ripping guitar solo, Dominic Minix croons and hollers lamentations about obsessive relationships whether it be with substances, vanity or a love long lost.
