Lady Pills - Renowned in the Roaring Twenties

Lady Pills, the indie pop rock solo project of Ella Boissonnault, will release its third full length album, titled Renowned in the Roaring Twenties, on Friday, April 4, 2025.

The album follows Lady Pills’ second album, the critically acclaimed What I Want, released in 2022. Renowned in the Roaring Twenties has been in planning for more than four years with writing beginning in 2020 and recording starting in 2022.

Boissonnault describes Renowned in the Roaring Twenties as a concept album.

“It’s kind of a reflection on the post-pandemic treatment of musicians and artists,” explains Boissonnault. “There’s that self analysis of, why am I doing this? Is it a job I need or am I reframing it for why I love it? And through all that, it includes observations of the music industry through this new lens of living through 2020 and the few years after. For example, I really noticed how the expectations of artists on social media changed throughout the pandemic.”

The album is a more mature expansion of what Boissonnault started on her previous album. She’s described that previous album, What I Want, as looking inward and serving as a rebirth and reclamation, helping her get back to her roots. With Renowned in the Roaring Twenties, Boissonnault looked outward more than inward, writing less about herself and more about the broader world around her.

“I had this element of being tough and angry in my writing before,” explains Boissonnault. “I’m not as anxious now when writing about sad or vulnerable material. I have less fear of judgment and don’t care as much about how it’s received. This album has really allowed me to say what I want, what I’m thinking, and what I’m feeling. Maybe it’s less tailored than my past albums, but it feels very free and joyful.”

After recording nearly everything herself for What I Want, Boissonnault made the deliberate decision to bring other people into the creation of Renowned in the Roaring Twenties.

“I still did a lot – vocals, guitar, some of the drums – but I was seeking more collaboration,” she added. “I brought in a bass player, a second drummer, and a saxophone player, among others. I wanted other musicians to bring their spicy sauces to add to what I was doing. Musically it’s become more mature than past albums. The parts are more complex harmonically, melodically, and musically.”

The first single from the album, BN2B, released in the fall of 2024, earned numerous recognition from music critics and writers, including being named one of the best songs of the year by Vanyaland and one of the best songs of the fall by the Boston Herald.
