2024 saw Upstate New York indie-punk rockers E.R.I.E. announce their third record with a uniquely compelling release strategy; The Highs, The Lows, And Everything In Between was released gradually, in three separate, EP-sized parts. It’s a poignant concept record that examines the underground music industry through both the past and present, celebrating the highs and coping with the lows.
Songs from THE HIGHS – released this past September and stylized in all caps – are energetic pop-rock anthems with pounding rhythms, loud guitars and soaring melodies akin to bands like Jimmy Eat World or The Gaslight Anthem.
Then the lows came out a few months later – stylized in, you guessed it, all lowercase – and E.R.I.E. demonstrated they are far more than just a one-trick pony. Here, the band stretches their legs stylistically in ways they never have, with vicious spoken word passages, dance-worthy grooves and soaring ambient guitars all showing up.
Finally, the band rounds out the trilogy with And Everything in Between, a sonic encapsulation of all that makes E.R.I.E. who they are. It’s rife with nostalgia, empathy and the keen eye for observing the world around them that made 2023’s Suburban Mayhem so enjoyable.
All together, The Highs, The Lows, And Everything In Between is a last will and testament of a record, from a band documenting their struggles with burnout and disillusionment, yet somehow sounding bigger and better than ever before. It’s easily the most polished and consistent set of songs in the band’s already impressive catalog.
