Separatr - Girl Exploded
Joe Douglas and Stephanie Melvin formed their ever-evolving duo Separatr in 2019 at their home in Washington State, just 90 miles north of the fabled Seattle music scene. After releasing a few songs they began talking about a big move to what they believe to be the best spot in America to be an independent artist- Asbury Park, NJ. Now just a short drive or train ride from NYC, Boston, Philly, and an endless number of other music hubs, they were also blown away by the quality and depth of the scene in Asbury. They spent two years diving into all the inspiration the East Coast had to offer and have come out the other side with their debut album, Girl Exploded. These songs are exactly what the title implies. With influences ranging from The Cars, Gwen Stefani, Sleigh Bells, and The Kills, the strength of this album lies squarely in its mix of the eclectic with overall cohesion.
Songwriter and co-founder Stephanie Melvin never screams, but the combination of rage, joy, cynicism, desperation, and confidence bursts through her lyrics and vocal performance. Producer, writer, and guitarist Joe Douglas has pushed their sound to the end and back again, allowing himself to indulge in groovy basslines and pop excess that he then dialed back to the barest form the songs would allow. The wick is lit, and when Girl Exploded comes out November 8th you won’t want to miss the fireworks.
