YJY return with The Same Noise EP, the follow-up to their well-received 2015 debut, Couch Surfin’ USA. With The Same Noise, YJY brush their surf-rock influence in broader strokes recalling a less blissed, more pissed Real Estate or Wavves if they were a bit more book-smart. The band is apt at creating anthems out of sarcasm-drenched disaffection and relatable subject matter. “Summer Lifeguard” is a perfect example, encapsulating the longing of a wannabe suitor and the lifeguard that is the apple of his eye’s affection with just a few lyrics and an earworm melody. Both the high school peaking character sketch “Past My Prime” and the uncool embracing “Through Being Hip” are reminiscent of the ironic sentiments of current greats like Parquet Courts as well as classic Black Flag songs like “Wasted” and “TV Party”.

While YJY do traffic in surf-indebted indie rock, the band has a healthy respect for noise, maintaining a menacing undercurrent for a sound that is as likely to give you sunburn as it is to revitalize your love of Pavement-esque indie rock sing-alongs. Eat your heart out Stephen Malkmus. Listen in and find out why YJY are causing such a stir. We hope you enjoy it!
