Don't let the Los Angeles location of War Tapes fool you; this is no sunshine-loving, surf-anthem-writing band.  Ask frontman Neil Popkin what he thinks of the band's sound, and he responds "We call it heart-quaking doom pop."  A pretty accurate description, the four-piece specializes in dark, brooding sounds for their debut full-length. The album's opening track, "The Night Unfolds" has driving drums and dark vocals that will surely hit a chord with fans of Interpol, The Bravery and The Cure. - Filter

“I had never heard of the Southern California band War Tapes...being sent their self-titled debut EP was one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. The music is a brooding concoction of old school Echo, Joy Div, and Cure, and all the elements that makes them formidable rivals to the contemporary sound of Interpol, Elefant and others. Personally, I like War Tapes better than anything these contemporaries have put out recently."- Powerline A.D.
