Trails and Ways could be described as a bossanova dream pop band. From Oakland, CA the quartet is made up of Keith Brower Brown, Emma Oppen, Hannah van Loon and Ian Quirk. They blend their love of Brazilian jazz, the tight song craft of Spanish pop and basement pop.

After graduating from Berkeley, lead singers Emma and Keith cast off to the far ends of the romance language world. Keith headed across Brazil for field research on renewable energy, and Emma to Spain in search of spiritual adventure and surf. Immersed, they both found themselves suddenly at the limits of their language--and in nylon-string guitars, they found a way to make sense of everything they were losing in translation. After those months lived abroad, they came home to Oakland with a vision. They teamed up with Ian Quirk on drums and Hannah van Loon on guitar/keys. Meeting up in the evenings in Ian’s bedroom their love of simple tight song structure started to take shape. All four members sing, braiding male and female voices down landscapes of percussion, reverbed guitar hooks and tidal synthesizers. The lyrics are verbal graffiti on the political superstructure, and lovers' unsaid conversations; crossing at the borders between Spanish, Portuguese and English.

"Along with tropical synths, technical guitarwork, and Afro-pop inspired rat-a-tat drums, there's the four glorious female-male multi-part harmonies that warm and come together like a picturesque sunrise on any given white sand beach (with or without tequila). It's snark-proof, globally inspired pop, with hints of Brazilian tones, Spanish language snippets, and the occasional whistle, or group ooh-ooh." - SF Bay Guardian

"Oakland’s Trails and Ways started 2013 with a bang: they sold out Cafe Du Nord and released Detornar-Se, a remix album that features reworks from Wallpaper and Yalls, among others. The band gained notoriety early in their existence with some outstanding covers of popular songs, most notably M83‘s “Midnight City”. However, I think their dreamy, gloabally influenced pop originals (such as “Nunca”) are where their true strength lies." - The Bay Bridged
