The Go Round
The Brooklyn-based folk-pop group known as The Go Round began its life three years ago, the product of a chance meeting between Brandon Whightsel and Richard Duke, two bespectacled singer-songwriters who have spent the majority of their lives giving into an inherited sense of wanderlust.
The son of an etymologist and an Alpine nurse, Brandon was born at the base camp of the third highest mountain in the Himalayas, Kangchenjunga (“Five Treasures of the Great Snow”). From these great heights he spent his youth descending into the intrepid and colorful world of the nomad. He spent his early teens as an olive farmer in northwestern Italy, where he whiled away his free time learning local folk songs on a Febricatore guitar. Richard was born in Tokyo to a pair of English instructors teaching their way around the world. With his parents' permission, he left home at 15, spending his young adulthood busking through the former Soviet bloc after picking up an abandoned guitar in the foyer of the Flying Pig in Amsterdam.
The two finally crossed paths in 2006 on an on ramp outside of Kimball, Nebraska. Brandon was working his way to Denver for a show that weekend, and Richard, having just finished hiking from the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, was hitchhiking to Lake Tahoe in search of work in the Sierras. Guitars in hand, they got to talking about the odds of both being dropped off at the same time on a lonely butte in the howling wind. The two decided to stick together and make some music, and the rest is history.
Though they started off as just a duo - as heard on their first album Gone - The Go Round now features drummer Scott Townsend and Theodora Prunoske on the violin, with both playing an integral role in the songwriting process. Scott’s impeccable timing and ability to see the future are obviously key qualities in any drummer. Theo’s sense of color and space play right into her remarkable melodic acuity. This tight knit unit has created a fantastic new EP entitled Eastern Parkway that melds Brandon and Richard's gruff harmonies and melodies with the delicate lilt of Theo's violin and the staccato delivery of Scott’s well-timed drum hits. And true to their spirit, The Go Round are ready to hit the road, with a never-ending supply of good spirits and traveling stories in tow.
Eastern Parkway is out September 20th via Aquatic Tart Records!
