Taking their name from a decommissioned train line that traversed the rugged California-Mexico borderlands, indie rock band, The Desert Line, ushers the listener across a diverse soundscape all their own on their second LP.

Lead by songwriting duo, Jason Phillips (guitar/vocals) and Patricia Pauchnick (keys/vocals), The Desert Line’s second full-length release, mixed by James Riotto at Tiny Telephone (Spoon, Sleater-Kinney, St. Vincent), features mature songwriting equally at home with exploring the transcendent nature of love, the ineffability of memory, and the banality of work.

From the shimmering opener of “Hear Today, Here Tomorrow” through the raucous closer of “Shadowhorses,” The Desert Line takes the listener through a 42-minute journey marked by songs pulsating with snarling electric guitars, lush strings, crisp horns, driving keys, while fortifying the ride with memorable melodies and tight vocal harmonies.

The Desert Line achieves this sonic blend sometimes within a single song. Witness the chime-laden, acoustic guitar-lead intro of “Spend It All” give way to booming drums and crunchy electric guitars that charge into an instantly memorable chorus. The upbeat, infectious rhythm of “What If Your World Exploded Too?,” is coupled with lyrics that evoke the pain of a lost loved one. The confident swagger of “Incantations” eventually falters beneath a towering squall of horns that rip away the very contours of the song.

The album's release was preceded by the music video for the lead single, "Spend it All." The video is set in California City, a failed post-war "boomtown" nestled on the fringes of the Mojave Desert. The surreal narrative portrays a couple who have taken up residence in the town–despite lacking a proper dwelling–who upon learning of man's voyage to the moon, dream of a life unshackled to earth and all its trappings.

This summer, after living in San Francisco for a decade, the duo relocated to their hometown in San Diego where they continue to create and perform.
