System and Station unearth new ground with their latest self-titled release. Their 15 years pounding the pavement demonstrates that pushing beyond your limits pays off. This album is succinct, dynamic and demands attention. You can draw influences (everything from Fugazi to John Coltrane) about System and Station but they’re about compression and originality.

From the colossal opener “Turned Guns” the spark is lit and the album burns until the epic closer “Fly us to the Moon”. Every hook, time signature and melody moves seamlessly throughout the forty minutes. Songs like “Fools”, “I met the Devil and the Devil was you” and “Occupied” glisten with three part harmonies and gargantuan guitar riffs. “Saturday Night Friends” is the showstopper with its heavy rock boogie; imagine Led Zeppelin as played by Stevie Wonder.

This album showcases System and Station is a sum of its parts. RFK Heise (Vocals, Guitar) is the primary songwriter and arranger but the execution is purely System and Station. The thunderous rhythm section of Adam Schultz (Bass) and Bryan Fairfield (Drums) is honed on the album in the form of an unstoppable train. Josh Vasby (Guitar, Vocals) weaves in and out of the arrangements with colors and shades of light and dark as well as shining vocal harmonies with RFK. Larry Crane (Elliott Smith, She and Him, Decemberists) is again on board as engineer and co producer.

Lucky for us the long road System and Station has travelled is paved with albums like these.
