Window Unit Blues marks the second proper full-length release this year from New Brunswick, New Jersey's overachieving Sink Tapes. Following January’s Creases, an LP consisting of over 20 power-pop, guitar rock numbers, and June’s In The Rug, an album of unreleased demos and odd b-sides, Window Unit Blues is perhaps the bands most cohesive and concise work to date. Its 12 tracks clock in at little over 40 minutes, starting and ending with two vividly descriptive, tone-setting title tracks. Telling the ever-relevant story of the suburban summer in the style of comparable cul-du-sac cowboys Big Star, lyrics about love, loss, and lonesome afternoons float within a lush guitar-driven soundscape. "You Shouldn't Have," the record's lead-off, is the band's most radio-ready single yet, but in spite of Window Unit Blues' many crowd-pleasers the band wisely spaces their short, familiar pop songs between long, languid power odes, and guitar freakouts, as the record slowly slips into a mellow but loud mood.
