Son of Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys furthers a long line of extraordinary projects from producer Hal Willner, stretching back to his legendary all-star tributes to Disney songs and the film music of Nino Rota. Willner has made a specialty of matching maverick artists, often in unexpected pairings, with surprising material; in 2006, he offered up a supreme example with the first volume of Rogues Gallery, hatched up on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest with actor Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski, who serve as executive producers of both volumes. The idea was to revive traditional folk songs of the sea, from pirate ballads to sailor’s work songs, sung by artists whose spirit of independence matched the material. True to this vision, the new double CD offers master musicians – from Tom Waits and Patti Smith to Michael Stipe and Broken Social Scene – and one of a kind pairings, including lead single “Leaving for Liverpool” with Shane McGowan teamed with Johnny Depp; the haunting “Shenandoah,” pairing Waits with Keith Richards; and the left-field matchup of childrens’ music star Dan Zanes with Broken Social Scene. For the legions of fans who bought the first volume, Willner promises “a very different record than volume 1. This one seems…happier? Not as much about torture, sodomy and death, which will disappoint some but, we don’t need to repeat ourselves do we?”
