Redrick Sultan
Where does red become violet? With a passion to put the freedom of color to music, Redrick Sultan creates breezy psych pop that has the feel of new air. Melodies and chords of unique form and creation traverse and combine the worlds of guitar-based rock/pop with a freedom of pitch partly inspired by Gamelan and Turkish traditional music. Lush vocal harmonies fall on a backdrop of slinky bass, bangin' drums - all whilst wrapped in the mystery of these foreign guitar sounds.
Fly as a Kite follows the fever dreams of a self-medicated drifter in limbo, reaching for the stars and pining for what's gone. Carried by the oft-harmonizing vocals of Seaborg & Norb, Fly as a Kite is partially inspired by a society's impact on human communication and the invisible distances people create between each-other. Using guitars re-fretted to have "extra notes" the sound of Redrick Sultan evokes "the feel of fresh air", as described by Kirkwood Rough: "The guitar had fractional tone steps utilizing additional frets allowing a fixed “bend like” inter-tone giving the sound a blue note of calibrated measure, and employed in the music as carefully as a mastered influence in final cut... What I hear in the emotional design of Redrick Sultan’s music is a change well worth promoting, they seem to have no fear of change and do well to represent this time we live in."
Fly as a Kite was partially written, crafted and refined on a 10-week self-booked, self-financed tour of the USA in early 2014. Redrick Sultan was recently named one of the top 3 local bands (unsigned) of Vancouver, 2015 in the Georgia Straight. Redrick Sultan will tour in support of Fly as a Kite later this year.
