Quality Living’s self-titled debut arrives from the ashes of NJ greats Morning..., not so much as a new band but more as a re-branding with some new influences. Whereas Morning... trafficked in jagged, off-kilter early ‘90s indie rock, Quality Living has found a groove, embracing the new wave funk of ‘80s greats like Duran Duran and Talking Heads. While the serrated guitar swells of indie touchstones like Television and Modest Mouse are still present, Quality Living breaks the mold with their embrace of Steely Dan smoothness, allowing them to stand out from their angular indie rock peers in a major way. Singer Darryl Norrell sings with the innocent inflection of Doug Martsch and Jeff Magnum. The album is chock full of silky swinging anthems beginning with the lilting bounce of “Tarsands” and culminating in the wide-eyed wonder of “Barry”.
