Professor Caveman

 
Professor Caveman have returned from Planet New Brunswick with their latest EP, Vol. 4, and the band has only become more otherworldly since last year’s Vol. 3. “The Virtu of the Harpe (for fela)” is maybe what would happen if Ariel Pink jammed with Fela Kuti and blasts the Nigerian musician’s legendary groove straight in to Outer Space. “Poughkeepsie Woman (pk wowo)” embraces the P-Funk in a half-remembered reverie. “Cardioversion (for tim)” could be a Mac DeMarco tune if he got his jazz chops down and recorded in another dimension.

Vol. 4 is full of psychedelic funk that somehow manages to chill out and freak out simultaneously. “Babies (for joe lee Wilson)” could be Animal Collective jamming with early Santana. Is this music made by dimension-traversing aliens? Nay, band leader Rob Romano and the rest of Professor Caveman are verifiably human, even as they manage to seamlessly tie together music from different eras in a totally unique package. The band exists on its own wavelength you need to get on their level immediately.
