Pile
"Pile has created a monster with Magic Isn’t Real, a rowdy hybrid of everything we love about rock, strewn together brilliantly. The record is an absolute masterpiece, thrilling from start to finish." ExplodinginSound.com
PILE has always played rock music, but, until recently, had little in common with a rock band. Following the dissolution of his previous band, the Boston MA-based HEL TORO, immediately following the release of their second LP, songwriter (and past Pirate! intern)RICK MAGUIRE had few options open, and decided to set up shop as DIY as possible. Two records of sparse instrumentation and cruel melodies followed in the four years that led up to 2010, DEMONSTRATION and JERK ROUTINE, albums mostly composed with simply a guitar and Maguire’s voice, churning out tales of lust, depravity, and violence, all soaked through with anxiety and post-millennial anguish.
Playing out in the booming dive bar and house show circuits seeping throughout the greater New England area led Maguire to actively pursue a full electric ensemble for the band, experimenting with a number of lineups, and eventually winding down to a core trio, with MATT BECKER on the bass and KRIS KUSS on the traps. This trio hit the road hard and crafted a set of ten songs they’ve named MAGIC ISN’T REAL. Tracked and engineered on magnetic tape by local legend RICHARD MARR at his GALAXY PARK STUDIOS in the summer of 2010, the band is self-releasing and self-distributing this new record, though this is nothing new; no booking agent and no manager to be found in this camp, as a DIY mentality is viewed as a necessity by the band to maintain their sustainability.
If asked to name their favorite bands or give some sort of “influences,” the members of the band would probably rattle off FUGAZI, HOT SNAKES, BLACK SABBATH, THE JESUS LIZARD, and THE REVEREND GARY DAVIS in quick succession, but there is little indication that this could or should be taken as fact.
