Groundbreaking releases often arrive unheralded, and The Postal Service’s Give Up certainly fits the bill. After emerging as a one-off side project from two musicians whose bands were on the cusp of being widely known, the gentle electro-pop wonder has captured the imagination of a generation of listeners and musicians. Those imaginations have been put to use on Never Give Up: Celebrating 10 Years of the Postal Service.
Never Give Up brings together 22 folk and indie-pop bands to create 21 covers of the Postal Service’s work. With three versions of “Such Great Heights” leading the way (Kris Orlowski, Seven Handle Circus, Venna), the release features two full reinventions of the record split into folk and indie-pop sides. The diverse sounds attest to the wide-ranging influence of Give Up: The Noise Revival’s full orchestra sits next to The Midnight Sons’ manic lo-fi ukulele strum, while Young Readers’ sparse acoustic guitar notes lead into Western Romantic’s ominous electronics. From chamber folk (The Collection, Jenny & Tyler) to bluegrass (The Parmesans) to hyperactive indie-pop (Decent Lovers & Seer Group, Gregory Pepper & His Problems), Never Give Up shows how beloved the album has become across an incredibly wide range of musicians and allows listeners to experience the tunes in a whole new way.

This release is put out in conjunction with Mint 400 Records, and was compiled in celebration of Independent Clauses’ 10th birthday as a blog. It was mastered by Dan McCurry at Apartment A Studio.
Independent Clauses ran a Kickstarter for the project to raise the mechanical royalties for 200 free downloads of the whole album. The price of any digital downloads sold ($4 per side, $8 total) once the free downloads are up will go to mechanical royalties (so the Postal Service gets paid legally) and long-term Hurricane Sandy relief via The Center for Disaster Philanthropy.
