Mutual Interest
Better Than I Expected
Sniffling Indie Kids/Mint 400
ADDS 12/12/17
DIGITAL ONLY

Mutual Interest began life when the members got together for a Halloween cover show as a tribute to the Smiths. They enjoyed playing together so much that they decided to start writing their own songs. The influence lingers on their debut album Better Than I Expected in singer Brian Cervino’s Morrissey-inflected vocals and the band’s take on the British indie rock sound of the 1980s, combining the influences of legends like the Smiths, the Cure, and the Jesus and Mary Chain. First track, “Sunset on a Perfect Day” opens with the bounce of Let it Be Replacements before settling in to the gentle dream pop of DIIV.

“Undermined” has a chorus guitar ripple that brings to mind Mac DeMarco, if he slipped out of his narcotized drawl to embrace the groove. “Seven Minutes in Heaven” has the glorious off-kilter pop hooks of the Cardigans while closer, “What Do I Know” embraces the raw ricocheting rhythms of Surfer-Rosa era Pixies with vocals to match the drama of the best Smiths songs. On Mutual Interest’s debut, the band are embracing a British invasion in reverse, taking elements of an underground sound from across the pond and inevitably making it their own.
