Following a long collaboration with Brooklyn-based rock outfit, Motel Motel, singer/songwriter Mickey Theis has reappeared with a solo debut, Range Songs. Comprised of elegantly orchestrated Folk-Rock that treks a territory somewhere between playful and sorrowful, this debut is the first release on Theis' own label, Infinite Gesture Records. 

Originally from Denver, Colorado, Theis is a songwriter and actor, currently based in New York City. As a musician, Theis has written and performed as a solo artist, for the theater, and with Motel Motel, a band with which he toured internationally and released New Denver (2008) and The Big Island (2010). As an actor, he has appeared in television roles and in off-Broadway theater, often developing plays with new playwrights. In his spare time, he reads, writes, or rides a unicycle.

Folk and Americana listeners will enjoy the more familiar song structures of “Orphan” and “Freedom,” while the more emotional and confessional “Places” and “Elsewhere” navigate darker, more elaborate musical terrain. Other tracks, like “True Love” and “Silent Son” demonstrate Theis’ craft as a budding producer, as he skillfully weaves sparse, Folk melodies into Springsteen-like, anthemic Rock. 

Range Songs presents a more experimental side with tunes like the jazzy, elegiac ballad, “Eyes Wide Open,” or the album’s cinematic instrumental, “Missing.” These more adventurous tracks serve as a compelling counterpoint to more traditional material, like the haunting Folk number, “O Haniel” or Nilsson-esque Country lament, “Are You Coming out Tonight?”
