As powerful as one person's songwriting can be, there's always room in the DIY underground for truly inspired ensemble playing. Maryland's Mess craft open-ended indie rock that makes the most of four distinct musicians' creativity and individual strengths. 

Recalling such beloved 90s-era indie precursors as Versus, Seam, and Spent, Tree is packed with interlocking guitar lines, shifting bass parts, and off-kilter yet propulsive drumming. Mostly adhering to time-tested quiet/loud verse/chorus structures, Mess tosses in just enough surprises to keep things fresh. 

The jangle/crunch ratio is expertly calibrated and the skillful vocals are emotive while maintaining an admirable restraint. Comprised of seasoned veterans of their local DIY scene, Tree is a mature debut from a band with plenty of room to grow.
