Martyrs is a band from Boston, MA. The people behind Martyrs take their music very seriously and have a long standing commitment to regularly supporting and participating in DIY music and art culture. Although Martyrs’ music is heavily rooted in Hardcore Punk subculture, the members’ influences are quite diverse and the band puts a serious effort into incorporating a variety of appropriate and relevant styles into their writing. Martyrs create music that both triggers a sense of excitement in listeners and inspires them explore musical styles that they formerly would have shied away from.

Martyrs recorded their first, self-titled record in 2014 at God City with Kurt Ballou (Converge, Russian Circles). After going through a series of lineup changes the band recorded The Great Disturbance in August of 2016 with Jay Maas (Defeater) at Getaway Recording.

Since the breakup of his band Shanghai Valentine in 2006, Dave (lead vocals / rhythm guitar) has been wanting to create music that remained loyal to the roots of hardcore punk while discovering appropriate ways to extend beyond its traditional sound. In the Spring of 2013, Dave started working with his close friend Vincent (lead guitar) in an attempt to flesh out some of the tunes that were floating around in his head. After a going through a series drummers, guitarists and bass players, they finally nailed down the first iteration; the group that created their debut. Since that recording, all members aside from Vincent and Dave were eventually replaced. Martyrs are now Dave, Vincent, Aaron (ambient guitar), Spencer (bass), and Sean (drums.)

Martyrs primary reason for existence is playing shows; ideally in all ages/DIY settings such as basements, function halls and art galleries. Martyrs has chosen explicitly to refrain from engaging in social media, believing that direct human interaction is critical to the organic evolution of art. Although Martyrs have strong convictions when it comes to DIY music and art culture, they are interested in intimately interacting with as many people and bands as possible both from inside and outside the culture.

The Great Disturbance was written in both Dave and Vincent’s living rooms, and honed live at Studio 52 in Allston, MA. While each song is meant to stand on its own, a major narrative theme running through record is the idea that the majority of human suffering is due to unaddressed irrational beliefs held by the individual. This draws heavily on material often documented in the field of clinical psychology with a heavy emphasis on the works of Albert Ellis. Although this theme is a universal assessment of humanity as a whole, the record at times focuses on how this concept specifically relates to modern underground art and music culture as well.

Dave hopes that those that listen to The Great Disturbance come away from the record with a sense of excitement, a desire to join them in live settings in support of what they do, and beyond that a desire to explore their local DIY art and music scene in person, away from their devices.
