Rose McGowan Stars in Luna’s New Video for Cure Cover - Pitchfork

“At their best, it’s hard to believe there is any other kind of music besides this simple, graceful, chiming chug” — the Guardian

“One of indie rocks’ most beloved live acts” — Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone

LUNA, the erstwhile NYC-based quartet, who last released new music in 2004, return this year with two simultaneous releases: an LP of covers - A Sentimental Education and an instrumental EP — A Place of Greater Safety. Both titles will be released September 22 on Double Feature Records.

Luna are now scattered around the country (living in Los Angeles, Manhattan and Austin) but remain the same band that they were from 1999 to 2005; Dean Wareham on guitars and vocals, his wife Britta Phillips on bass and keys, Sean Eden on guitar and Lee Wall on drums.

The band had reformed in 2015 with a commemorative tour that coincided with the Captured Tracks release of a deluxe vinyl box set of the records they made for Elektra (Long Players ’92-’99).

The new material was recorded on and off in 2016 at Palmetto Recording in Los Angeles with producer Jason Quever (Papercuts).

Tracklisting:
1. “Fire In Cairo” from the Cure’s 1979 debut Three Imaginary Boys.
2. “Gin” by Boston punk legend Willie Alexander
3. “Friends” — beautiful song penned by Doug Yule of the V.U. in that period where Reed, Morrison, Tucker were long gone and they were Velvet Underground in name only.
4. “One Together” from Fleetwood Mac’s 1970 Kiln House LP, the first after Peter Green had departed but still years before Buckingham Nicks.
5. “Most of the Time” from Bob Dylan’s Oh Mercy
6. “Sweetness” from the debut album by YES, sizzling guitar solo by Sean Eden
7. “Letter to Hermione” from David Bowie’s Space Oddity album
8. “Walkin Thru the Sleepy City” nominally by the Rolling Stones from their Metamorphosis album (a personal Dean Wareham fave) a song penned by Jagger/Richards for the Mighty Avengers, the Stones demo has Keith and Mick playing with session players like Jimmy Page and Jim Sullivan.
9. “Let Me Dream If I Want To” originally by NY punks Mink DeVille, recorded live at CBGBs in 1976
10. “Car Wash Hair” by Mercury Rev. The Rev’s recording of this track back in 1991 featured Dean Wareham on guitar and backing vocals. This year Jonathan and Grasshopper of Mercury Rev returned the favor and added guitars and vocals to this Luna recording of the song.

The 10” EP A Place of Greater Safety contains six new instrumental tracks (though two of these “Spanish Odyssey” and “Around & Around” appeared in different incarnations in the Luna tour documentary Tell Me Do You Miss Me).

Both albums are contained in the deluxe version which you can download below!
