Long Gone
When hardcore kids "go country", one of two things tend to happen. Either they form a cheeseball faux-rockabilly self-parody, or they take the time to fully absorb the source material and create something reverent, urgent, and compelling. Meet Long Gone.
Songwriter/guitarist Ryan Berry has been a part of standout hardcore and punk groups Curmudgeon and Pandemix. He's also been a massive (and vocal) Neil Young fan. Long Gone fits the "ear-splitting country" tag self-applied by fellow Massachusetts hardcore-turned-indie vets Dinosaur Jr.
These songs tend toward the mid-temp, free-form, jam-informed murkiness of J Mascis and company, along with the tasteful heaviness of 90s alt-rockers HUM, with a pinch of the immediacy and determination of DIY punk. Bassist Lucy Nadeau's vocals contrast wonderfully with Berry's laconic drawl. Drummers Shannon Thompson (on this recording) and Steve Loverme (current live drummer) contribute intricate, yet tasteful, percussion.
