LKFFCT expand their sound and find an earned wisdom with their third album, Dawn Chorus. “Hatchling” and “Ayy LMAO” embody an alternate timeline where ‘60s psychedelic classics rubbed shoulders with punk and indie rock; think Strawberry Alarm Clock meets Guided By Voices or the Animals jamming with the Clash. “Phobic” is one of the few great examples of a song that is beautiful and fragile while simultaneously being a pitiless dissection of a certain sect of the American public. Father John Misty would be proud. Heck, he’d probably be jealous he didn’t write it.

“Bridget” is a vulnerable, Elliott Smith-esque meditation while the shuffling “Punching Bag” takes on the aura of Green Day’s Dookie deep cut, “Pulling Teeth”, but done in the style of Bright Eyes. The finale explodes in a horn-drenched free-for-all that wouldn’t sound out of place on Oberst’s masterpiece Lifted. LKFFCT has the uncanny ability to be super tight while sounding like it could all fall apart at any moment. The controlled chaos along with their musical maturation makes for an engaging listen. Writing songs that sound like instant classics certainly doesn’t hurt either.
