"Instantly entrancing with an earworm groove, John Van Deusen’s new single “Social Sucker” is an alt-rock jam for avoiding social leeches." – Atwood Magazine

John Van Deusen is thrilled to share his newest single, “Social Sucker,” premiering now on Atwood Magazine. The song is the latest from Van Deusen’s forthcoming album, (I Am) Origami Pt. 3 – A Catacomb Hymn, out July 19th via Tooth & Nail Records. Pre-orders are available now at https://jvd.lnk.to/origami

“The term “social sucker” is something I made up (I think?) to describe people who come across as leeches in social situations,” shares Van Deusen. “They take and never give; they see people as resources and fuel for their own flames of ambition. Clearly, most of us are guilty of seeing other people as crude oil at some point in our lives.”

He continues: “Sometimes I feel like I’m singing this song to myself as a stern reminder. Whether singing to myself or not, I am communicating to someone who I don’t recognize anymore because they have immersed themselves within a community of ‘social suckers.’ In some ways, I’m pleading with them to leave it all behind and come back to a more sincere reality. I think sometimes we get so deep in to those situations that we don’t really know who we are anymore.”

John Van Deusen creates aggressively honest, thematically rich power pop. His style is built on a strange foundation of influences, resulting in an indie rock sound that feels both familiar and curious. From his early career in The Lonely Forest (Trans/Atlantic Records) to his recent outings as a solo recording artist, intimacy and vulnerability have been hallmarks of his songwriting. Consider his work as a little note that says, "It's okay to not be okay."

Van Deusen currently lives in Anacortes, Washington, with his wife and cat, and helps run a board game store. He also yells and plays bass in the hardcore punk band BUFFET.

(I Am) Origami Pt. 3 - A Catacomb Hymn will be released on July 19th through Tooth & Nail Records. For this album and its forthcoming sequel, Van Deusen teamed with producer and friend Andy D. Park (Pedro the Lion, Deep Sea Diver).

Album features guest appearances by David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) & Claire England (Dude York)
