John Cozz is already a local NJ legend, that friend of yours who is pretty good at skateboarding but stands out due to his big personality, suddenly picked up a guitar and turned out to be a pretty great songwriter. Recorded with Max Rauch (LKFFCT, NGHTCRWLRS), the new album Deep Fried captures real growth in Cozz’s songwriting, better incorporating his unique worldview and funny stories in to song form. First song “Kinda” perfectly captures that vibe describing a time where he drove drunk, something that most of us have done. He ends the song very glad that he didn’t die, filled with regret as we all are after such an episode.

“Choke Up” perfectly captures how difficult it is to communicate when you feel awkward in a raw style that would make Titus Andronicus and Jeff Rosenstock proud. The gnarly, distorted “Braincation” sounds like early Wavves with a dash of Misfits darkness and “Catskills” is a Smiths-esque fever dream describing some sort of breakdown in Bethel, NY.

Stop taking yourself so seriously and enter the world of John Cozz. But most importantly, follow him on Instagram and go see his live show. You won’t regret it.
