"a pounding, hook-heavy jam focusing on the perils of life after love" - The Key / WXPN

Howlish hail from Philadelphia’s booming indie rock scene. Their debut album Outer is an atmospheric wonderland of psychedelia, flirting with electronics even as they conjure a classic rock sound. In that sense, they can recall fellow Philadelphia natives The War On Drugs, remolding classic sounds in to dense ethereal meditations. First song “Woods” opens the album with melted candle tremolo guitars. The song is dark Americana drenched in Cryptograms-era Deerhunter haze. Songs like “Black Ice” and “Amy” resemble the pop rock of The Bends-era Radiohead but from another dimension.

Outer approaches the emotional density of Disintegration-era The Cure but it never overwhelms, instead underscoring the songs to wrap you in their world. This album doesn’t ask you to listen to it so much as dissolve in to it. Howlish conjure the sound of sadness but in a way that makes you feel alive because it cuts so deeply. In that sense, they are here to help make the world a more beautiful place.
