With her softly sweet singing voice and her uncanny ability for writing pop songs that really stay with you once they have dug into you, Hearts of Palm UK is centered around the considerable talents of Erica Elektra. Catchy yet emotionally direct, she writes clever indietronica… each are “hits” in their own way— softly melancholic and uplifting at the same time and all done quite literally in heels, a fact revealed both onstage and in homemade videos where “fancy” prom-style dresses and casual LA low-key hipster kitsch abound. The Hearts of Palm UK debut album For Life is full of glittering, twinkling songs that describe heartache, loss, love, hope and optimism. Mastered in Sweden by Henrik Jonsson (Peter Bjorn and John, Robyn, The Knife, Lykke Li), the album fuses the intensity of electro, the sweetness of lo-fi indie pop, the danceability of Euro club hits and the immediacy of folk music. (The reason behind the “UK” suffix is one of the nationʼs most heavily and successfully guarded secrets.) For Life is an album of material culled from the many songs she had written, mostly in response to falling in love, and then to the disintegration of that love. The result is a brief but enduring record—easy on the ears but by no means devoid of content.
