Dollys, perhaps NJ’s most beloved band, have decided to call it quits. They leave us with their third and final album, Tense. Just like the previous two, Tense was engineered by bassist Erik Romero and the album builds on the band’s charm and quirkiness, doubling down on complicated harmonies that betray a deep love of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. Opener “Too Bad”, uses jagged surf guitar to thrust us in to one of the band’s best choruses. On “Collapse”, Jeff Lane’s guitar has the sprightly chime of Johnny Marr while singer/drummer Natalie Newbold becomes the song in a way that only great vocalists can. “Girl” has the complicated harmony arrangements and optimistic tom-heavy bounce of Pet Sounds while “Another Thing Coming” is an all-time pop rocker and an absolute must-listen.

The album closes with “Tenant”, a song that is harrowing in its gentleness, recalling Elliott Smith’s best work. Tense is the sound of a band working at the peak of their powers and will continue to display its considerable charms for years to come. All things must come to an end, unfortunately, and although the band is no more, Tense reminds us why Dollys was loved so deeply.
