C.R. and the Degenerates return with their second full length of the year, Degeneration which follows January’s incredible synth drenched left-turn Close Encounters. Degeneration finds the band in psychedelic Americana punk mode in their best offering yet. Band leader C.R. Gennone, recorded half the album with his live band and half on his own. The first half of the album hits hard. “Bargain Bin” and “Big Ideas” kick things off with a 1-2 punch that recalls Summerteeth Wilco and Uncle Tupelo. The incredible “Operation Smiles” is Neil Young & Crazy Horse meets Hüsker Dü and is even better than you imagine that to be.

The back half of the album slows things down a bit beginning with “Resisting Cardiac Arrest” which has a tricky rhythm reminiscent of Down on the Upside-era Soundgarden by way of the War On Drugs. “A Shot in the Dark” closes the album in a Bruce Springsteen-esque ballad that crescendos gloriously in a saxophone and vibraphone-led squalor. The songs on Degeneration are short. They stick around just long enough to give you what you need and then seem to leave you abruptly. In that way, it reflects life in all its exhilaration, darkness, and brevity.
