C.R. and the Degeneratesare back at it again with Coming of Age, their FIFTH album in just two years. Calling singer/guitarist Chris Gennone a prolific songwriter is kind of an understatement at this point but the band he’s built up around him since the project began has grown into the perfect accentuator to his alt-country leanings. First single “White Noise” is a gorgeous fever dream of an ‘80s Tom Petty song with a stunning lead from guitarist Jim Abbott. This is how lead guitar should be played - no wankery, just pure feel. “Leave It to the Pros” finds the middle ground between the pastoral garage rock of The Men or Milk Music and the ethereal flow of It Still Moves-era My Morning Jacket. Title track “Coming of Age” captures the spectral heartland rock of the War on Drugs whereas “Fate is a Fashion” could be Neil Young singing for Yo La Tengo.

Album closer “Quicksand Pt. 2” channels Ryan Adams in one of the greatest acoustic laments that’s been written in a long time. Coming of Age is the best C.R. and the Degenerates record yet and it’s a great entry point to an already storied discography. Stop sleeping on this band because Coming of Age demands to be heard.
