Big Little Lions, the ferocious songwriting duo of Helen Austin and Paul Otten, craft precisely detailed, harmoniously resonant music bi-coastally; Otten in his Ohio valley studio and Austin in her little red studio on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Both successful singer/songwriters in their own right, their paths first crossed at a conference panel on songwriting success (between them they have had hundreds of TV, movie and ad placements.) In their collaborative body of work as Big Little Lions, Austin is the heart and soul and Otten is the bones and blood.
Most of their forthcoming Far Flung / Blaster Records release A Little Frayed, A Little Torn was written via email, with the duo sending anything from an initial idea to an entire song to one another, followed by myriad additions and alterations pinging back and forth across the ether. In fact, Austin and Otten have actually found a certain freedom in being able to write without the other person’s energy invading one’s space – says Austin, “there was one time we were trying to write a lyric in the same room... so I waited until Paul went to the bathroom and when he returned I had a verse and chorus!”
Austin’s accolades include a JUNO win, a Canadian Folk Music Award, an ISC win and a John Lennon Songwriting Competition Grand Prize while Otten was recently awarded the John Braheny Songwriting Award, was a Song of the Year Contest finalist and produced several of the tracks on Helen’s most recent JUNO award winning album. Together they have won 1st place in the International Songwriting Contest won the top prize of Song of the Year in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition.
