LaVette’s story has always been intertwined with her music – she is known for her deeply personal interpretations of songs, even changing lyrics to personalize the songs to her life and world. On Thankful n’ Thoughtful, she takes the classic folk tune “Dirty Old Town,” most recently made famous by the Pogues, and resets it from Dublin to her native Detroit, giving a slinky, down and dirty update to the classic. Add songs by the Black Keys, Sly Stone, Tom Waits, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan, and you have Bettye’s grittiest, funkiest album to date. Building on the triumphs of the last few years, from her performance at the Obama inaugural to her viral hit covering the Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” at the Kennedy Center, Thankful n’ Thoughtful and her new autobiography will bring Bettye the soul icon status she so richly deserves.
