Professor Caveman

Rob Romano and his New Brunswick based band Professor Caveman have released a super intriguing and bizarrely original EP, titled Vol. 3. Their first work since 2014, Romano provides a unique combination of funk, synthpop, psychedelia and jazz, reminiscent of the unpredictable, strange, and yet strangely familiar songwriting style of early Foxygen and Ariel Pink. The luscious, crisp guitar chords on opening track “Lemon Water” become entirely unfamiliar within two minutes: they melt, blend, and evolve into something else entirely; cryptic and fuzzy vocals mumble lyrics with a South American flavor, all accompanied by a brilliant horn section.

The second track “Tappy Tappy Bling Bling” takes a slightly different route, with synths and wah-filtered guitars that sound at once loungy and psychedelic. “Vaseline” has the laid back brilliance of early Mac DeMarco and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, a hit song from an alternate universe that eventually settles in to an interstellar jazz groove from another dimension. Professor Caveman may sound otherworldly but these alien transmissions are bound to take over your world.
