YJY
The Enduring YJY is the culmination of three years of growth for YJY. After two distinct EPs that showcased the louder and softer sides of the band respectively, The Enduring YJY both integrates and expands those two sounds into a cohesive full length record. The songs range from the blistering punk of “9 to 5” to the tender love of “Best Coast Weather”, which cleverly flips the message of Weezer’s Blue Album classic “No One Else” on its head.
Singer/guitarist Steve Sachs still uses his songs as biting critiques of himself and his generation but the lusher sound (recorded by bassist Tim Fitzpatrick) brings the songs to a more melodramatic place. The orchestral undercurrent of “You Don’t Believe Me” is a perfect example and even the Ricky Lorenzo-penned instant classic, “Loathe”, finds the band’s usual sarcasm in a more frenetic space. The classicist melody and spiky guitars of “Passport Photograph” sound like Television covering The Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride”. The Enduring YJY showcases the band’s many different sides. You can blast “Somebody Take My Phone” on your way to the beach or reflect solemnly on your life via album closer “Life Is Just Okay”. This album is the sound of a great band at the peak of their powers and you need to hear it.
