Sink Tapes

In the past year, Sink Tapes have been far from quiet, releasing three full-length records and three singles. Their first release of 2016 comes in a different format from the band’s norm. The concise, 18-minute long ST EP 16 includes five songs penned by drummer and vocalist Gabe Chiarello and one track by newest member Matt Lambert, who plays bass and sings. With Ricky Kuczynski and Alex Kielmanski on rhythm and lead guitars, this four-piece group follows time-honored rock formulas while through simplicity and originality successfully avoids conventional clichés and excess.
ST EP 16 is loud, but not without moments of softer contemplation. It opens with “J For Jazzy”, a number held together by a pounding, relentless drum sound that comingles with a network of power pop harmony vocals reminiscent of radio favorites like Cheap Trick. On “Sleeper”, the production shines, and the depth of the track’s many layers underscore the song’s narrative complexity. Country guitar that calls to mind Gram Parsons sets “Special Arrangement” apart, showcasing Sink Tapes’ huge range of rock n’ roll reference. “Overnight Stay” is jam-packed with hooky lyrics, a driving rhythm, and one double guitar lead break, while “It’s Wearable” boasts haunting major to minor chord changes. Storytelling takes center stage on “Pornographic Railroad Station”, where Chiarello sets a scene that’s specific while still leaving room for interpretation. As the ballad builds from slow and soothing to big and open, it keeps listeners guessing – and by the time it ends, they’ll be dying to hear what Sink Tapes delivers next.
